This is a topic that's really on my mind right now because I'm in the middle of a major upgrade to my home studio. I want to do a thorough write up as soon as I'm done, but I think it'd be cool to know what everyone else has or is using.

Using the audio-technica usb mic (same one as popular podcast). It usually sits on a foam block to absorb any bumps. I use audacity to edit, I use nero to compress to mp3.

How much is a decent USB mic anyway?

The USB mic I use at the office cost about a $100. (Samson C01U) I know some people can get away with a lot less. Seems like the good mics are all around $100.

decent usb mics start at $70, the audio technia is anywhere from $110-$150 depending on where you shop (and guitar center does sell them)

MXL DRK mic directly into the computer. Edited with audacity. Cheap Sennheiser H150 headphones. The mic picks up a lot of ambient noise, so instead of putting up a lot of sound deadening I built a down and dirty cage out of PVC that fits over my chair & computer desk. I just throw a blanket over it. It collapses down to store in the closet in less than two minutes & really makes the sound noticeably better.

Ghetto, yes. Also cheap, easy, and produces great sound.

Okay, almost done with my rig now. I need a new case so that it'll all fit together a little nicer and I want to build a rackmounted PC for protools to run on the go. Here's what's in the box right now:

1. Digi 003 Rack - Nice little unit for 8 in and 8 out inside protools
2. Presonus DigiMax 8 - Mic preamp brings me up to 16 inputs inside protools
3. Furman Power Conditioner - gotta keep the power clean plus ya have to have a power strip.
4. Behringer Tube Ultragain - mic preamp really good warm sound
5. Behringer Tube Compressor
6. Alesis FireWire 8 mixer - sort of becoming obselete inside the box, but I suppose I could use it to add another couple inputs except that it'd have to be mixed down to stereo and ported through inputs in one of the other devices.
7. All stored inside a Gator Case

Lots of punch for a little space.

Hello,

Nice informative post regarding Home Recording Studios. Where words fail, music speaks...
I use Entertech ET-18000 microphone. It's truly nice setup at very affordable price.
